3.2.14 Staples. The staples shall be stamped from wire, 0.025 + 0.005 inch thick. The wire shall
be steel, Monel metal, brass or stainless steel. If ordinary carbon steel is used, it shall have a non-
corrosive finish capable of withstanding not less than 25 hours of the salt spray test when tested as
specified in 4.4. The staples for the inner body band, front stay, and chin strap shall measure 1/4 +
1/16 inch wide and have divergent prongs 1//4 + 1/16 inch long. The staples for the button post shall
be heavy duty flat, standard clinch 0.005 inch wide, 1/4 + 1/64 inch long legs, 1/2-inch wide crown
when tested as specified in 4.3.2.
3.2.15 Crown support. The crown support shall consist of a steel wire enclosed in a nylon grommet
conforming to the following requirements:
3.2.15.1 Steel wire. The steel wire shall be spring steel 5/16 + 1/16 inch wide and 0.020 + 0.005
inch thick, cut to required size. The wire shall be completely covered with white pyroxylin coating.
The coupling shall be 1 + 1/8 inches long and zinc or cadmium coated to withstand 25 hours of the salt
spray test and when tested as specified in 4.3.2.
3.2.15.2 Nylon grommet. The grommet shall be composed of nylon filling yarn and cotton warp
yarns braided to form a grommet, approximately 3/4 inch in diameter. The filling yarns shall be a clear
nylon monfilament, 0.012 + 0.0005 inch diameter. The warp yarns shall be
12 + 1/2 count singles carded cotton. The grommet shall be made on a 48-carrier braider or
44-carrier braider, with carriers braiding in pairs with a 1/1 weave with one 0.012 inch braiding in
pairs on a 1/1 weave with two 0.012 inch diameter nylon monofilament ends per carrier. Right warps
or nine warps when a 44-carrier braider is used, of 2 ends of cotton yarns shall be evenly spaced
around the circumference interlacings. There shall be not less than 8 picks per inch in the relaxed state.
The ends of the grommet shall be joined by the use of wood or cork plugs, laminated paper rings, or
other suitable material to insure proper closure of the grommet. Testing shall be as specified in 4.3.2.
3.2.16 Threads. The threads for seaming and stitching shall be cotton, Ticket No. A (Tex 50), 3 ply,
when tested in accordance with A-A-52094. The color of the threads shall be White (for seaming and
stitching), Black, Shade AA (for stitching binding to cap and outer band and visor and sweatband welt
to cap), and Goldenlite, Shade AJ (for elastic braid stitching, Class 1 only). The thread for zigzag
stitching the sweatband and sweatband welt shall be nylon, Dyed Brown Shade A0 conforming to
Types I or II, Ticket No. E (Tex 75), 1-ply, when tested in accordance with V-T-295.
3.2.16.1 Colorfastness. The dyed threads shall show "good (rating 3-4)" fastness to light and
laundering when tested as specified in 4.3.2.
3.3 Labels. Each hat should have a combination identification-size label and cardboard
instruction label (see Figure 4).
