3. REQUIREMENTS
3.1 First article. When specified, a sample shall be subjected to the first article
inspection in accordance with 4.2 and 6.3.
3.2 Materials.
3.2.1 Basic material. The basic material shall be vinyl coated cloth (artificial leather), untreated, white,
in accordance with Class 7 of A-A-59517, but with the following exceptions:
(a)
The widths of the base and coated cloths are not required.
(b)
The commercial designation of the base cloth shall be 3.70 ounces per
square yard.
(c)
The weight of the coated cloth shall be 15.0 ounces per square yard
(minimum).
(d)
The coating weight shall be 12.0 ounces per square yard (minimum).
3.2.1.1 Grain. The grain shall be a simulated twill weave embossing.
3.2.2 Front piece supporter. The material for supporting the front piece shall be a nylon
mesh type, white, knitted on a single needle bar Raschel provided with ground and inlay guide bars.
The mesh cloth shall be single face with a knitted chain effect on the back and shall contain laid-in
threads every other course. The pattern (design) shall be as shown in the standard sample. The finished
cloth shall meet the physical requirements when tested as specified in 4.3.2.

3.2.3 Crown protector. The material for the crown protector, personal label pocket, and
binding shall be 0.0040 + 0.0004 inch thick flexible film in accordance with ASTM-D-1593. The
personal label pocket shall be heat or electronically sealed to the crown protector and the strength of
the seal shall meet the bondability requirement of ASTM-D-1593.
3.2.4 Inner body band. The material for the inner body band shall be of high density (linear)
white polyethylene plastic in accordance with ASTM-D-4976. Thermal stress cracking resistance,
low-temperature brittleness, and dielectric constant and dissipation factor shall not apply. The bands
shall be extruded or stripped, slit or cut, 2 + 1/16 inches wide and 0.030 + 0.002 inch thick and have a
stiffness (scale reading) between 15 and 31 inclusive. Testing shall be as specified in 4.3.2.
